I am really struggling with the xray diff :|

What ever seems to happen, the diff is great when the rings have been sanded and are fresh, but as soon as I do 5 minutes, the balls start slipping on the plate regardless of how tight it is, As if there is to much grease and the balls are sliding on the grease / polished surface instead of gripping.

Tried using Xray and Schumacher diff grease (both same results).

Any help and advise would be great.

I have ceramic balls in and new diff rings and conical washers.

interestingly there is also a tight spot that seems to develop - but this may be another issue.

The conical washers are around the correct way?
I'd be tempted to recheck them. Can be very hard to tell sometimes which is the raised side and which isnt.

Cheers
Andrew

Could it be that your rings are slipping on the outdrive? This usually happens if you put some grease between them.

Hi

The tight spot might be due to a worn thrust bearing, try to sand the thrust washers or put in new ones.
The slipping is like david said, mostly between the rings and the outdrives. Try to sand the backside of the ring with 1000 wet grid and put it on the outdrive without using grease. Clean the rings and outdrives carefully and get rid of all the grease on the outdrive.

Think this should help to make it smooth and not slipping.

I had the same problem, it's probably the plastic locknut that is worn out. Try a bit of loctite (or a tiny bit of CA glue) on the bolt that holds the diff together.

You can take a look here

The conical washers are 100% definitely no questions asked in the right way.

its the plates slipping on the balls, not on the outdrives, as Ive even got to the stage of marking the plate and outdrive when its assembled to see if it was that, that was slipping. and no its not.

I shall inspect the short outdrive. But its not like the diff is old? it came with a 011 kit :S

Reuben you can borrow one of our output drives on Sunday if you want. We have run XRAY diffs only for the past 4 years and never experienced this, maybe you have duff one? Or are you guys overtightening them and stripping the thread I ask myself

Can I ask what kind/brand of grease you use?

Schumacher Diff grease in the plates
Muchmore Thurst (grey colour in a red pot)

I tried Hudy kit grease and it made it slip more.
I also tried Associated in the thrust and it seemed to cause to much drag in the thrust and there was to much resistance when rotating.

I have spent to many hours just taking apart / inspecting, making sure everything is straight / flat / free.

Weird thing is, A friend also has a Xray with a diff and I built his up perfect every time with no slip and its super smooth and free.

Mayb its time to throw it in the bin and start again (the diff, not the car, because the car is AWESOME)

I will bring a couple of outdrives along Reuben and rebuild it for you - only guaranteed to work with 10.5 though, not 5.5 :D
