I have never broken an outdrive before, still have diffs that are over a year old.
But I would suggest replacing the blades maybe more frequently.
Also are you using the plastic diff?

We're using the Alu T6 hard coated outdrives.

Hmmm, don't really know what to suggest then. Perhaps using the large bumper that Xray do might help. I can't believe that something else doesent break before you break an outdrive, but then again I don't race foam with a diff in the front so I can't really comment. Broken plenty of plastic spool outdrives running indoors though.
