I've heard similiar things about certain tracks, some think it's the scaffold of the rostrum or chain link fencing interferring with overhead power cables or something like that - weaker signals at distance give interference a chance?

I've not had a prob with mine, that's why I went over to 2.4g, peace of mind

Do Futuba receivers still overheat?

First series of DX3R had some troubles in my country, because they lost connection with reciver near powerlines. But this was over a year ago and I don't think, that they sell those series any more.
I don't own a DX3R or S, but if I would buy any of those two transmiters, I would choose DX3R, because it has DSm2 technologie, DX3S has just DSM (cheaper, but slower with data transfer).

I now own a Futaba T3PM 2,4 GHz and I it works great.
