I think it's just a alignment problem it sounds like MadBrad. 99.9% of the time,,that is the issue. the other 1 percent is the starter wheel, (worn out or sitting to low in the box)
You shouldn't have to change from the Xray flywheel. You should be able to shim the starter motor upwards inside the box with some washers or shims if needed.
I have a Ofna starter box with a big start wheel, and a little mugen box,with a very small start wheel. Both of them will start either of my 1/8 scale rigs. It did take some adjustment to get them to work, as it does with any start box.
A very narrow slot on the chassis of the Xray, everything has to be pretty much dead on and no movement of the align post when you push down to start.
If you are grinding rubber on the chassis, something is not quite lined up right, or you have a worn groove on the rubber start wheel.
