I ask because your comments seem to contradict them selves in standard shocks . I understand how there is less % deterioration in lower weight oils but you then need smaller holes to allow for this. This means that having more oil in large bore shocks is self defeating surely??

I must admit we had some really good results when we used some progressive suspension piggy back caps. So more oil does seem to work but bigger holes means heavier oil.

i get what you mean... that's the limitations of the standard shocks... you need more damping, you add more wt to the oil... or have smaller holes on the piston...

having a bigger bore shock, more oil will have to pass through with the same amount of shock movement comparing with smaller bore shock, if they have the same size and amount of holes on the pistion... this will create more damping effect. if you want to have the same damping effect, you will lower the weight of the oil... thus, the advantage is lesser fade and more suface area for the disipation of heat... simple, isn't it...

as for the shims system, they have hugh holes on the pistons... then have shims to cover the holes... when oil is force through them, the shim flexes to allow oil to flow through.... you can control the amount of oil flowing through/when the shim flexesto allow oil through, by the stiffness/diameter of the shims, and the preload that you put on the shim stack...

for more info, you can look up any suspension website on the net.... of course, that's for the real stuff.... but suspensions are suspensions, be it on a rc car, or on a real rally car....

I was impressed at the looks of your oil after all that time. I am very happy with these shocks and glad I got them.

I hope the new Xray shocks wont be built the same as they are now but I fear all they did is make a threaded collar and a larger body. If they didnt ditch those stupid shims and G-clips I will keep my Jammins on and sell off the new Xray big bores.

I run shock socks over the springs as well so that debris wont rip into the boots so mine should be extra protected from dirt.

Well I just ordered a set of the shocks and the short standoffs so I'll give them a try and see which I like better.

the principle of changing your holes on the piston in the shocks works great I had them on my serpent Javalin (4x4) off road 15 years ago :p
I know the principle and can draw it but can not build it they had just one disadvantige: the bumps made pins in the shocks sometimes crush
but you had two rings and just screwed the bottum end of the shocks lose (of your under arm and twisted the shocks). then you got bigger or smaller holes in your shocks.
