Very astute of you Tony. I must say the first couple of times it happened I did not pay too much attention as I was between races with little time so just pulled the assmebly apart and rapidly re-assembled - my asumption was that the pin had come loose. The 3rd tiime was during testing so I had more time and it seemed to me that the pin was not loose. What I should have done and did not, was to take a driver and see if I could move the pin.
I have been thinking about this and my mind has gone back to the original problem where both front pins sheared. Up until then I had not suffered the problem. I have no idea why the pins sheared but logically it would be a strong force striking the wheel horizontally (once on each side!!). With the pin located in the hole you can imagine that if the force was strong enough to snap the pin then the hole could be damaged - even though sight suggests not.
I think rather than swapping a rear to the front, I will buy 2 new axle stubs and drive shafts and see if the problem repeats.
I will let you know the result albeit it will be a week or two before I can implement and test the change.
