The slowest gearing (17/36) is still to large to keep the motor alive on a stock motormount and stock chassis.

With 15/36 you will lose speed but gain punch out of a corner and more important a longer life of your motor. Using a alu motormount and a heatsink the motor will stay cooler but still there is a chance to burn up the motor with the lowest stock gearing.

When the motor is overheated a small dish to strength up the collector will go lose and block the motor, you may remove the dish when opening it.

Drivers in my micro club are encountering problems with the XRAY micro motors (burning out, seizing up) using stock gearing too. And at least one person had an XMC-180 fry soon after starting to use it.

On my car, I run the following:
* XRAY or HPI micro stock motor
* Novak SPY ESC
* GP1100 5-cell pack
* Alu motor mount
* XRAY motor heatsink
* 19/42 gearing (sometimes even 21/42 but acceleration suffers)
* HPI high-performance carpet rubber tires (all around)
* Profoform Mazda6 body

I have not yet had a problem with my motors, and the car seems fairly quick and punchy. I get very good runtime. After a 10 minute run, the heatsink is warm to the touch but not overly hot. Also, the screws for the motor mount are also a bit warm, so I assume the motor mount is drawing heat away as well.

I believe that the others that are having problems run the stock gearing (17/36) with no heatsink and stock composite motor mount. They say that their motor gets so hot that touching it would blister your skin.

I think that the combination of metal heatsink components I use (motor heatsink and motor mount) is what is stopping me from having the same motor problems.

You should also try the Orion stock motors. Towerhobbies has them. I burned up a motor to 2 motors a week trying to race when I first started racing xrays. Even now the newbies are still burning up those xray 180 motors. Do yourselves a big favor, buy the HPI or the Orion Stock motors and get a heat sink or an engine heatsink mount.

hey,

The stock motors do get pretty hot, what we did here was amde a slot on teh chassis and so air will flow in, or anotehr way is to make a scoop on the side of the motor. You can also gear down. The temps Im usualy at on Ozite carpet is 102F [use a temp gun]after a 7 minute race. i run 17 and 36 spur. I take off all teh stock motor lables, because those only keep the motor warmer,[like a jacket] .

those clicking sounds in teh motor, is loose wires, snapped off brushes, dues to motor over heating..

I hope thsi helped

The powepack is indeed a waste of money but getting a mamba brushless is also spending a lot of money (and there are some cogging problems with it)

Choosing the right ESC, batteries and servo is a good point to start with and as a motor the Graupner Speed-300/6v is the cheapest thing to get for lots of power and speed.

Did not try it in a Xray yet....

My MRS4 setup:

To give you an impression:
http://aktionrc.com/video/sleepertrailerhires.wmv

And there are more crazy people:

Again, no Xray but does support a 540 and 6 sub-C cells :D

Yes, you do need to fix another motormount but with a piece of aluminium and some tools it is easy to make. Fixing the batteries is yet another problem.....
