What is the easiest/best way to remove the flywheel from a nitro engine? They are really hard to pull off after they have been secured with the flywheel nut. I have read that it is best to use an automotive battery terminal pulling tool, but I don't have one of those. Is there an easy way to remove it without introducing undue stress to the motor shaft and flywheel? Thanks in advance for your help.

Crack the nut and back it off a turn or two. hold the flywheel in your other hand or with a pair of multigrips and tap the shaft lightly with a hammer. If you've got a small bit of wood, put it between the shaft and hammer, so you're hitting the wood not the shaft and wont burr over the threaded end of the shaft. A rubber hammer is best coz then you wont have to worry about burring it. always works for me and i've never hurt the shaft or flywheel...

I just tap the backside of the flywheel lightly with a 4 way cross wrench.

I had a smaller version of this gear puller floating around in mu Snap-on box. so thats what I use.

I just use a cheapo 4 dollar battery terminal lifter I got from AutoZone. It works like a charm. I too used to try to tap them off with a hammer, but the one off my RB motor was so tight it even needed a good bit of effort with the battery terminal lifter to get it to pop off.

I bought a 3 leg puller 7 bucks and install the screw in the end of the crankshaft and ususly tighten by hand and the flywheel always pops off. I tried the hitting and jamming method the engines are worth too much to not do it properly. A PULLER IS A GOOD ENVESTMENT.

I agree 100%. The one I bought from the auto parts store is only a 2 leg, but it gets the job done, and is less likely to cause damage to your expensive engine.
