XRAY - Model racing cars

I'm running the new lightweight clutch shoes (trailing) with the xray silver springs and have broken 2 of the springs within a half gallon of fuel. Anyone else having this problem? I'm hesitant to use the xray springs again.

Joe G, I just broke my first 1.0 spring, it had less than 1 gallon and I'm using the 1.71 shoes as well.

Are you making sure to put the small washers in between the clutch shoe and fly wheel. I have been using the Xray shoes (1.71) and 1.0 springs since I have run for Xray and have never had any of these issues. To me there is noting better than running aluminum shoes but they do require some maintainence. Usually after and before the next race I take the shoes off and clean them of any burs created from wear to make sure they do not catch on the flywheel and seed back into the closed position. Also this might help with creating any uneeded stress on the springs causing them to break.

I've seen quite a few people break them as well. I ran them with Xray 1.71's for the life of the shoes and never had a problem, but I have seen lots of guys locally break them.

Aluminum clutches last a long time but a little maintenance is required. You need to use an exacto knife to remove the mushroom that forms or the shoe can catch on the clutchbell and possibly break the spring. I usually file mine after every full day or so of racing.

I use an exacto blade and cut off the excess after each qualifier.
