XRAY - Model racing cars

I took my diffs apart for the first time.

I noticed that the diff washers were showing some wear on the side bearing on the diff balls. This wear shows as a worn groove.

I assum that such wear is to be expected, but I'm curious as to how much wear constitutes too much, requiring a change out of the washers and balls?

my view is that diff balls are round, and that they need a groove to run in (as there is better action than on a flat surface) so I would say that there is nothing wrong! re-lube and rebuild.

When removing the thrust bearing, you need a c-ring pliers. The pliers I have are a bit too large for the the ring used in the diff.

While I'm sure I can can find an adequate tool "somewhere" would anyone have a tip for a store (sears, home depot, radio shack, etc.) where I could find one so I don't end up driving all over town looking?

just get some old pliers you don't use any more, or that are rusty or what ever.

and get a grinder/dremel etc to it and grind down the ends until they fit in the little holes.

hi chaz, i think these are only available in the uk, why i dont no. for me as a motor technician it serves a double purpose they earn my money for me as well as helping me in the hobby.perhaps the xray guys can come up with a solution that is resonably priced.ian

Chaz - Not sure what's available in Denver, but in Michigan I bought a Craftsman Snap Ring Plier from Sears. Not sure of the p/n, but it's about 6-7 inches long & cost $10. They had a few larger ones, but I took the snap ring with me & found the small one that fit/works perfectly.
