I've finished building my new Xray M18 and I installed the Xray Power Pack. I used a standard size 2-channel Futaba AM reciever, mounted on top of the steering servo. I charged the battery in the car, hooked up all the electronics, but something's not right. It worked great for about 5 minutes, but now it's acting weird.

Now I still have full steering control, but when I squeeze the throttle trigger on the transmitter, it only creeps forwrrd about 3 inches and stops. The light on the ESC flashes after that. It does the same in reverse. Then the weirdest part, I can pick up the car, try to do reverse, and the wheels on the car will spin a little backward and then all by itself, the car goes full throttle forward until I turn it off.

I contacted Xray and told them my problem, and they offered to replace the ESC. I still have the same problem with the new ESC installed. What am I doing wrong. Do I need a new Transmitter? The one I have is pretty old (10 years?).

Uf...if you exchanged the speedo for a new one and still have the same problem, then you problem will be have to be in the radio. Maybe something wrong with your receiver but I will guess it is your radio. The XMC300R is a very reliable speedo so there is virtually no chance you could get two wrong speedos.
Take a radio from some of your friends and try it. After you will exchange the radio and receiver you should get the car working.

That is my thinking too. I will try it on my friends Xray tomorrow night. He was having a similar problem, but he has a much newer and nicer radio transmitter. If it works, then I guess I'll need to find a new radio. Maybe another AM? Micro reciever?

I have a JR racing radio and it works great. There's a digital read out to let you know the voltage left in the radio, and set's up virtually anything you need. The receivers allow you to set your channel to whatever you want between 61 and 90 I believe.

Are you using the XMC180 electronic speed control from the Power Pack? Everyone in my local club who used this ESC had it stop working for no apparent reason. I recommend you try another speed control to see if the problem is resolved.

Yup, I'm using the ESC from the Xray Power Pack. When I first assembled the car, everything worked great. It was fast, and I could go in reverse, but the next time I picked up the controller, about a day later, nothing.

When I put the brand new replacement ESC (from Xray), it didn't work at all. I think I will order a ESC from another company and see what that does.

That sounds like what I'm running. I don't remember about the batteries, but I'm running whatever came in the Power Pack.

You're probably using the 5cell pack then if you're using what came with the xmc-180.

I'm not sure if the extra 1.2v may be causing problems?
