Actually, the rails make sense in the fact that different engine manufacturers have differing engine dimensions. Not only the linear space between the left and right mounting tabs, but, if you assemble an engine with clutch bell and everything, then measure from the front of the clutch bell to the center of the first mounting hole on the block, they will vary slightly.

Think about the stroke...some engines are long stroke, which means the distance between the crank pin and crank center is greater, and some are short stroke (diameter being smaller). To keep rigidity and strength, a long stroke engine should have a bigger space (a block wall can only be so thin) between the left and right mounting tabs.

For those who said they don't know what I'm talking about, take a look at this (pic from Ofna's site). The four holes around the slots are where the base mounts to the chassis. When you unscrew those, the entire motor and mount come out as a single unit. Where you see the purple is where you set your gear mesh. If you have multiple engines with mounts, once you set your gear mesh for that clutch bell, you just remove the four screws and replace with another engine/mount combination and your gear mesh is set the same as before. If XRAY incorporated that idea with their design, I would then say they have the best engine mount out there!

Maybe I'll get time in the next 20 years to draw one up and I'll post it here! :)

im pretty smart and you lost me after "ofna"??? i know the slots are on the bottom but what about that ear that you drill the hole in the chassis? if the 4 bolts(where its purple) move then the other 1 hole in the chassis has to move also right :?:

z-man, the pic SuperXRAY posted is not an XB8 and the info he posted describes a mount that comes on OFNA cars. Its designed differently than the XRAY one that has just been designed and there's no "other 1 hole". I have one similar to the OFNA one on my Hot Bodies Lightning Pro.

Derek ran the extended King Headz mounts on his X5 all last summer and I never drilled the extended hole in the chassis and we had no issues.
I don't think it is necessary to have the hole drilled just having the extended finger to support the clutch bell area is plenty. I will have the new Xray mount on both his XB8s and probably wont bother with the extended hole on them either.

Yeah thats the same mount thats on the 777. The only problem with your description is that when you pull the whole mount off and you take the mounts off the plate you lose gear mesh and have to reset it everytime. So what your saying doesn't make sense. The only way you keep gear mesh is if you take the whole plate off and work on the engine then put the hole plate back in. Its not good for switching engines. Once you take the mounts off the main plate you lose gear mesh

I think too many people have misunderstood how the ofna mount works. I didn't say XRAY should copy it, either, just incorporate that idea into their design. I'll work on CAD'ing up a diagram of what I would like to see.

It's nice to see so many differing opinions, though!

So what is the price of the new XRAY mount?
