Hi spillay,
First of all welcome to the wonderfull world of XRay and Rc-racing.
I hope you appriciate some help from an other newbie (2 months a fk, 1st car was a m18 in dec 2004). I've already posted a lot of 'newbie questions' and had a lot of answers. A lot of the work to be done is trial and error.
There are not a lot of people running brushless yet ... I'm one of them (Team Orion Vortex, somewhere at this forum I posted a review of it) and a friend of me has a Novak.
Lets quickly scan your question:
1) Pinion / gear ratio
This depends strongly on your track. eg. I'm running now on a fast track 21/83. I started with 25/83 but run-time/ / temp of the controller and lap time was better with 21.
The solution for me was buying all pinions from 20 to 30 and gears from 78 to 99. And test
2) Transmitter
I bought a Futaba 3PK. But most of the guys in my surrounding have ko-propo. But I don't have any text here. Very contect with the Futaba, but a little heavy.
3) Tires
Depends strongly on the surface you are racing at and ack temps. I run on asphalt with currently low temps (5-15 degr. celsius) and have good results with Take-off 27 and Sorex 28. With orange HPI inserts. But I presume temps in SA are much higher. So Sorex has tire above 30 (harder) and you should also go for harder inserrts. Again trial and error and off course .... looking to other drivers and their set-up.
4) Body
HPI and Proline fit. I use the protoform Dodge Stratus 2 and 3. Where the 3 gives more downforce and steering respons.
I hope some other more experienced drivers can add some more depth to my answers.
Good luck and have fun
