XRAY - Model racing cars

Hi All, new to the exclusive xray owners club so just want to start by saying hello and congrats on the new 12th car, I have got myself one for my club winter series in Torquay this season and really like it so far but I'm just not fast enough!!
I am running a reedy 10.5 mach 3 in blinky mode as that's just what we run for some strange reason!
Can anyone please point me in the right direction for motor timing and rollout? (Pretty much an average national sized track!) I have been racing 1/12 for 15+ years so not a complete novice but the stock racing has never been my forte!! I think the car is fast enough electronics wise but always seems particularly lazy in the infield and wander if anyone has a good successful chassis setup for 10.5 racing?!

Good purchase, glad to hear you like the car

We use 10.5 blinky at nationals which is why your club probably run it id guess, its a decent speed for clubs.

I have never ran the mach 3 but id guess gear ratio for that motor probably needs to be around 67mpr. Start with timing around 30, if temps are ok after each run then try more timing, if too hot then reduce to suit.

Hi Olly, thanks for the quick reply! I'm glad it's from you! Congrats for west kent! Yea I suppose that's why we run 10.5 but only 1 of our members running at nats and he's doing 13.5 anyway! Ok so I was at a fraction over 70mpr with timing up to 40, but I cant get my head around spur and pinion sizes as I have seen a lot of you guys seem to run pinions almost as big as the spur! I am always unsure weather to run small pinion big spur or vice versa or somewhere close as poss to 1:1!!
Never so difficult in the 4 turn days cos they went like a stabbed rat anyway!!

Try check with Mark Stiles for exact settings on timing etc as I believe he ran the new mach 3 at round 1. But what I suggested should be to far off I wouldn't think.

Ideal thanks olly ill see if I can get hold of mark about that, I had a look at your chassis setup sheet from Kent, do you think it's worth trying your settings but using stock motor? I mean obviously the cars are much faster in mod but how much do you change your mod settings for running stock?

Yeah it should work well in stock too. My car was pretty good on Sunday in modified after some changes which I am sure would of helped Saturday too for stock.

If your running at your local club the grip will not be as high, id suggest using spider blue instead of green. Green works best generally when the track is rubbered in which at club level is difficult, but give both a try to be sure. You might find green starts well but wears of quicker.

Brilliant, thanks a lot for your help olly, yes I am already using spider blue and have found crc green rears and chrome fronts to be very successful although I am still getting a bit of almost grip roll only doing the inside half on the fronts but haven't played with springs as yet so that could be the trouble I guess?!
Got Wim to speak with mr stiles he says 84 spur and whatever pinion to get about 68mpr so I have plenty to try for now!!

Could you also tell me what your front springs were at west Kent I see the number on setup sheet but don't recognise the number/rating also is there an xray equivalent of ae black side springs? I have these sets for sides and centre

You will probably want to use silver side and the soft front spring(grey).

Soft springs seem to work pretty well.

Been to the next round at Torquay today with the car after some discussion with Olly and info from Mark S about gearing etc, so thanks for the help!
I ran with Pretty much Olly's setup from west Kent as suggested with a few minor differences, I Found it very successful after taking a few rounds of qualifying to get used to having a car with more front end than I have ever experienced!! I used crc green rear and crc chrome fronts, softened up all round on springs which got the car very stable and no grip roll all day so a big result there! Also removed drag brake I put on as I thought having a bit would help slow it to turn in, but it was just slowing me full stop! And down to 66mpr and timing up to 35 making it seem a bit more lively. A good day qualifying 3rd but got tangled too many times during the final leaving me 4th, in brief, very happy with the car but the thumbs are just lacking ability!! Thanks for all your help
