1- reassuring me I'm not getting crazy
2- pointing me into the right direction. The culprit is the dust cover indeed, and it does take some dremeling to make it work. I did that yesterday and it fits now.
I believe in theory rear gear diffs are a bit harder to drive than ball diffs as they don't forgive anything. I agree the huge advantage of gear diffs are zero maintenance, but really I run 13.5 on low/medium-grip carpet, so maintenance isn't that much of an issue anyway. I have built the gear diff anyway and I will try both - easy to swap back and forth to make my own experiments
