Trying to understand changes again. :D

I noticed that you made changes that would be on my list to 'increase' grip at the front or increase turn in, like thinner roll bar, more camber, arm sweep, stiffer rear springs etc.
Does raising the upper front link (inner and outer shims) increase traction at that end.

I ask because a lot of the setups I've seen before, where the driver was trying to gain more steering or initial steering, ran the front links lower than the rears :?

I'm trying to understand when I should add or remove the shims etc.

Thanks
Skiddins

The higher front link (the roll center is lowered, albeit slightly) definitely freed up the car in the infield. It carried more cornerspeed with the higher link.

Stiffer rear springs, definitely helps to increase on-power steering. Lately I have been using a 2.7 rear spring, sometimes in combination with a progressive front spring for sharper turn-in, while the linear front spring may help for mid corner (which was the case in Portugal, but there the conditions were a bit different with very low grip). In Italy I liked the progressive spring up front.

Arm sweep increases turn-in, I use 0.5 of sweep for most conditions. You can go even more but usually it will be over the top, and it will hurt rotation.

A thinner front roll-bar increases on-power steering as well but turns-in more smoothly on corner entry. For asphalt my basic setting is 1.3 front and 1.2 rear.

Camber, depending on the tire and its slip angle, 2 is a good starting point both in front and rear.

Thanks.

So if I'm trying to get the rear to stick more, but without having to go to a softer rear springs due to chicanes etc would I be better off lowering the rear link, or leaving the inner at 1mm and raising the outer.

I.e. if I raised the rear link on the inside AND outside it would free the rear end up?

Thanks
Skiddins

My first choice would be to raise the inside by 1mm if you want the rear to stick more. You will loose on-power steering by doing so however.

Thanks, this is all very useful :)

WHen you've gone with lower front links, is the decision to try taht based on grip levels, they type of tyres you're using or the track itself?
