Took apart my diff, the skinny o ring no longer fits perfectly. Is this a problem? Will the diff leak without it?

No, just take the O-ring out.
The diff's seem to work OK with only the cardboard gasket in place.

Just like Skiddins said, you can use only the gasket. The diff works fine this way.
