The diff gears will strip out if the slipper is not set correctly. It's purpose is to absorb the shock loads of the drive train and if set properly, the drive train will be spared. If tightened too tight or locked down, the shock loads will be sent through the drive train and the weakest point will fail. It seams that the weakest point would be the ring and pinion gears in the front and rear differentials. Set your slipper correctly and let it do its job.

I started building mine last night, and found something:

The manual says nothing about using shims to get proper mesh from the crown and pinion gears in the diff casing. There are no shims supplied either.

BUT, I had to add 0,2mm of shims in the rear diff, and 0,3mm of shims in the front diff to get perfect mesh.
That is quite a lot IMO, but not all kits will be the same so check yours while building. And check your car if you already have built it!

I had to use shims to get a tighter mesh. With the loose mesh I had in my diffs with no shims, I would not be surprised if the gears would strip quite easily.

ALL crown gears and pinions need to be shimmed in order to have perfect mesh, which is crucial for durability. I am a bit surprised that Xray chose not to include this...

Tamiya makes some very nice shim kits in 0,1 and 0,2 and 0,3mm thicknes (TAMIYA part number 53588 for the 10mm set). I bought a bunch of shim sets in various sizes some years a go, since there is always something that need to be shimmed properly

Please do not add any shims. The small play (clearance) is by purpose. If you add shims you will eliminate this small play. During the operation the diff gets warm and will expand and if there is no clearance the diff will have difficulties to work properly. Just build the diff as per the instruction manual.

I've set the slipper even more loose then the manual says, but the diff gears also got stripped.......

I wanted to know if the method I read for setting the slipper was ok to use on the xb4 ?

The method is to hold both rear wheels on the floor and by pulling the throttle trigger the front of the car should lift up at about 2 inches max from the floor.

It worked fine on my 2wd and 4wd car but I'm worried the bevel gears on the xb4 won't take it ...
