I am wondering about this adjustment.

I am told that with a longer top link one should have progressively more grip with a longer top link. I have found to the contrary. Am I going mad????????

In any event, I am thinking about lengthening my rear top link - either by moving it outboard, or moving it to a more central hole.

What's the difference of lengthening:
a. in the direction of the bulkhead, or
b. in the direction of the hub/upright

Is it also the case that lengthening will help reduce overall rear grip - I am seeking to lose a little at the back to help make my car a tad pointier.

thanks

Thought longer links increased grip but reduce the reaction speed of the suspension.

The one hole rear uprights are supposed to increase corner speed, but reduce the rear grip slightly.
Using them means making the rear link slightly longer towards the hub, so perhaps that answers part of it.

Out of interest, have you ever tried the spec r rear hubs?

Hi All,

It is almost the same as when you lower the roll center, but with this, You lose some camber rise also.

I think with lenghtening the rear link, You lose rear reaction time, but You win mid and end corner rear grip. So if You have a car which oversteers in the beginning and then understeers at mid or end - dont do that ! :)

In my opinion it is better in grippy conditions, specially with foam tires.

As the upper link becomes longer the camber gained during suspension compression (Xray tuning guide refers to this as camber rise) is reduced compared to a shorter link. Longer link= less camber gain. Shorter link= more camber gain. If you have a setup station you can actually observe this difference by noting the camber at ride height versus the camber at full compression. The theoretical response of the car on track should be:
1. Shorter link- more mid corner traction with less forward grip
2. Longer link- less mid corner grip, but more forward grip.
A shorter link can make for a more responsive car too, but it can be less stable. Changing the camber link length will have a small effect on your roll centre too.

Keep in mind that these adjustments are relative to your tires, the track surface and other suspension setup factors. The response of the car may not always follow the theoretical prediction if the initial or new setting was/is beyond the correct setting window.
