At the moment I'm thinking of making about 3mm thick carbon fiber plate and dremel some discs out of them for testing. About making the carbon fiber plate - I guess like always its best to get the carbon fiber vs resin mixture as good as possible ie as little resin as possible...

Wikipedia shows, that there are about ten types of PCB board available:
Well known prepreg materials used in the PCB industry are FR-2 (Phenolic cotton paper), FR-3 (Cotton paper and epoxy), FR-4 (Woven glass and epoxy), FR-5 (Woven glass and epoxy), FR-6 (Matte glass and polyester), G-10 (Woven glass and epoxy), CEM-1 (Cotton paper and epoxy), CEM-2 (Cotton paper and epoxy), CEM-3 (Woven glass and epoxy), CEM-4 (Woven glass and epoxy), CEM-5 (Woven glass and polyester).

Where does he find 3mm thick PCB board?

Hi lauri,

The XRAY carbon disc brakes are already available.

This is a link to the showing they are in stock (although you cannot order directly from their site).

So today I ran with self made pads. Made from 1.5mm textolite PCB board. They were good. Less maximum braking power than with stock pads, but you don't need as much anyway. Enough to get the wheels to block on low-medium tracktion track. The main thing was that they were consistent whole day. I will check for wear tomorrow. Metal pads and brake discs are kept stock.

Tomorrow I'll test how they work with fuel spatters - the main reason for me to make them.

Cost was 3€ for PCB board that can be used to make about 40 pcs of pads  It took about an hour to dremel them out...

Mario, what are the major diference braking characteristics between the steel and carbon ones?

Which ones are lighter?

Cumps

I've now ran the truggy with self-made pcb-board brakes for about 2-hours. Everything is perfect and haven't yet noticed any wear i.e. haven't had to give more EPA to get more braking power. No problems with them whatsoever. As they are almost the same thickness as stock pads they are a direct fit.

I think the characteristics of my self made brakes are better than stock. They seem to lock up later and give you more "good" braking power. TQ'd in our national championship race so can't complain  Worked great in moist/wet and dry conditions!

I would recommend this mod to anyone who has 1-2 hours of free time and wants to try something else than stock brakes. Worth a try and probably you'll keep using them.

And make 2 or even 3 sets of pads at once. Drill the holes, dremel them out from the PCB board and then screw them together between the stock metal pads. Then sand them to perfect shape, stock metal pads give you the right shape and you are ready to go!
