So my son is doing his hot laps today before his main and the front wheel just falls right off. I assume that the wheel nut had just come off and it would be a quick fix. I get over there and there is the wheel laying about 10 feet away and the axle and cvd is still attached to it. Upon further inspection I notice that the inner bearing had completely failed leaving the race still in the C-hub and the rest of it just fell right out!!!! I have never seen anything like this before, have any of you?

never in an RC car.. I've seen plenty of alternator bearings on full size cars fall to bits like that.. but usually only when you give them a good whack on the inner race to get them out of the housing when you're just gonna toss them. Even when they fill up with crud, they normally chew the race out or seize up completely then chew the retainer out, not fall to bits like that.. My guess would have to be a real good hit from something, while going sideways on the inside of the wheel.. maybe a bit of a rut or another car's wheel or something... whatever it is, its odd and sounds more like bad luck then anything... its always a good idea to check and replace bearings after every few meets. depending on the quality of the bearings and whether you wanna stuff around getting seals in and out, you can re-use them if you clean them out and re-oil them.. kyosho bearing oil is heaps better then bearing grease in RC cars - nowhere near as much drag on it.

That happened to me with my PCR buggy,, but not with the TQ. Going thru my learning curve with the Ofna buggy and pounded the pipe a few to many times with the wheel. I think maybe there was play in the drive hex and axle pin and it allowed it to take its toll on the bearing,,sliding in and out,,eventually pounding the bearing apart.

I have had that happen once, about 8 min into a 20 min main. I never expected to see that kind of bearing failure before that , I keep a better eye on the bearings since then .

The same thing happened to me before too. During a race the whole thing just came out due to the bearing failure, just replace and then race.

Interesting, I figured some of you would have had this happen. No one at my track had ever seen it, so I thought possibly it was very rare that it happens. It was not an old bearing as the buggy only has about 1.5 gallons thru it. I have a set of 20 bearings coming from Avid so I will now have plenty of spares. It didnt seem to hurt the C-hub at all luckily.
