Post subject: | Nimh Charging tips |
Hey guys I am new to electric and could use a few tips on charging my Nimh Maxamp 4400 6 cell battery pack. What I have read so far is dont trickle charge this type of battery,You dont need to completely discharge this type of battery, they suggest discharging down to 5.4 volt, dont charge on a peak charger,After calculating the charge time they say at 4 amps it will charge in 1.3 hours. Also if I plan to not use the battery for a week or more put a small charge on the battery,Also I read that you need to charge till the battery is warm not hot. Some of these tips dont seem to be too detaied. Also they say that you should use the battery within 1 hour of finishing the charge. What is a good charger brand to charge this battery? The info I have read was from Novak Electronics.RC car action battery golden rules. This battery will power a Novak 3.5 brushless motor system installed in a T2R. |

Ok, here some info for you. Based on what I've read and practice. Charge de battery at 5 amps. Use an peak detection of about 3mV. It should take about 45 to 50 minutes. If you buy an charger with a temp probe set it to 40 to 45 degrees Celcius cutoff. Never trickle charge a NiMH. If you run stock, you can charge at 5.5 or 6 amps for more top speed. 5 amps will give longer runtime for modified. I use an Orion carbon charger which is fine, but you could buy a Robitronic Expert 2000 or a Duratrax ICE which I believe is a favourite with RCCA magazine. I'm still waiting for the one I ordered. The battery should just finish charging when your race is up to give the best results. If you don't run for a while you should charge it to 1500mAh or so. Discharging is done to 0.9 volts per cell, which works out to 5.4 volts with a 6 cell pack. Have fun racing and happy new year!. Leon. |
