BALTIMORE -- Wei-Yin Chen pitched better than he had all season, and Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Chris Archer was never worse. The result was a lopsided 7-1 victory for the Baltimore Orioles, who got their offence back on track Monday night at Archers expense. Chen (2-1) retired his first 10 batters and didnt allow a hit until James Loney doubled with one out in the fifth. The left-hander gave up one run, five hits and two walks in 6 1-3 innings. In his previous two starts, Chen yielded eight runs and 21 hits in 10 2-3 innings. "I think the main difference tonight was the movement on my pitches was better and the hitters had more trouble with it," Chen said through a translator. Chen also got a big assist from his defence, beginning with the first play of the game when third baseman Ryan Flaherty snagged a sharp grounder and threw out Ben Zobrist. "I thought balls went right at some fielders," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "We were fortunate tonight. Real good defence. ... The baseball gods were kind to him tonight after not being kind to him early on." Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy each had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Orioles, who were coming off a three-game series against Toronto in which they scored only five runs in 30 innings. In this one, Baltimore built a 6-0 lead over the first three innings and coasted to the finish. The Orioles had 13 hits, including five doubles. "A lot of big two-out hits, a lot of big RBIs with guys on second," Wieters said. "It wasnt really the long ball that did it tonight, but we found a way to win." It was by far the poorest of Archers 30 big league starts. The seven runs and 12 hits he allowed were both career highs, and his ERA jumped from 1.38 to 4.50. "I actually felt good about how my stuff was," Archer said. "I just made too many mistakes -- and thats a good lineup." The performance came less than two weeks after the Rays gave Archer a six-year contract that guarantees the right-hander $25.5 million. "If there is anything to take away from this game, I think its how positive and encouraging my teammates were," Archer said. "They fully believe in me, and when I came out they all said, In five days, youre going to make somebody pay." Chen was facing a Tampa Bay team that has been struggling at the plate. The Rays have scored only 14 runs in their last eight games and have tallied three runs or fewer in seven of the last eight. "We did hit some balls well. Our geometry is really bad right now. Were hitting balls at people," manager Joe Maddon said. "We just have to keep going up there and battling through it. Its just one of those bad periods." Tampa Bays only run came in the sixth inning when Zobrist walked and scored on a single by Evan Longoria. The outcome, however, was decided long before that. Wieters gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the first inning, and Baltimore added three runs in the second. Hardy doubled and Flaherty sliced an RBI single past the drawn-in infield before Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis delivered run-scoring doubles. Doubles by Wieters and Hardy, followed by Steve Lombardozzis RBI single, made it 6-0 in the third. Singles by Wieters, Hardy and Flaherty gave the Orioles a 7-0 cushion in the fifth. The seven runs were more than the Orioles scored in 11 of their previous 12 games. "Its nice to go out there and pitch like we did, hit like we did," Hardy said. "Its just good to play a good game." NOTES: RHP Jake Odorizzi, scheduled to start Tuesday night for Tampa Bay, experienced flu-like symptoms and was sent back to the team hotel as a precaution. It appeared to be the same virus that sidelined Rays reliever Joel Peralta last weekend. ... Miguel Gonzalez is slated to start for the Orioles on what is projected to be a cold, wet Tuesday evening. ... Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) ran six 90-foot sprints in Florida and is slated to run from home to second base Tuesday, Showalter said. ... Tampa Bay optioned LHP Jeff Beliveau to Triple-A Durham and recalled RHP Brad Boxberger from the same minor league club. ... Tampa Bay OF Brandon Guyer was interviewed before the game by D.C. sports anchor Lindsay Murphy, who is also his wife. ... Since the start of last season, the Rays are 14-1 when Archer goes at least six innings and 2-9 when he doesnt. . Now, Sarah Burkes legacy will live on in Canadas Sports Hall of Fame. Burke, who tragically died at age 29 from a training accident in 2012, headlined the 2014 class named for induction Wednesday. .C. - The Carolina Hurricanes hope they now have the leadership tandem in place to turn the franchise around. http://www.soccermexicojerseysteamstore ... co-jersey/. Wilson hit Schenn from behind during Tuesday nights game in Philadelphia, earning a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct. He has a phone hearing with the department of player safety, which limits any potential suspension to five or fewer games. .C. -- The Carolina Panthers announced Thursday theyve signed free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery to a two-year contract, helping rebuild a depleted wide receiving corps. . LOUIS -- When Braves second baseman Tyler Pastornicky backpedaled into shallow right field to catch the popup and Jason Heyward didnt arrive fast enough to take charge, Kolten Wong got the green light.CALGARY - On Tuesday Mark Giordano was told by Team Canada management that hes next in line for a spot at Sochi. Tonight hell face two other Canada defencemen in Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Pietrangelo as the St. Louis Blues visit the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames offensive struggles continued on Tuesday with a 6-0 road setback to the Phoenix Coyotes. Thomas Greiss stopped all 27 Calgary shots fired his way. It marked the fourth time in six games and fifth in the past 10 that the Flames have been shut out. Tuesdays loss came one night after Calgary notched a 4-3 win at Colorado. "They get the two breaks and then Phoenix just sat back and waited," Calgary coach Bob Harley said. "If you look at offense, they have more weapons that we do. Their top three lines can all score." Reto Berra was victimized for all six goals on 30 shots for the Flames, who have lost nine of their last 11. Calgary will play its next two at home, where it has lost four straight and has been outscored 10-1 in that span. Berra has been in net for both of the Flames previous games against the Blues this season, including a 3-2 loss in St. Louis back on Nov. 7. He made 32 saves in the shootout win in late December. It is unknown if Berra or Karri Ramo will start tonight. Ramo has faced the Blues just once before and that came back on March 6, 2009 while with Tampa Bay. He made 32 saves in an overtime setback. For their part, the Blues will be looking to grab a share of the Central Divisions top spot. The Blues have been on an impressive roll as of late, going 8-0-1 in their last nine games overall and 11-1-2 since a loss to Anaheim on Dec. 7. St. Louis notched a road victory in Winnipeg three days later to start a current 6-0-2 surge as the visiting club. That is the longest point streak on the road for the Blues since a club-record 11-game run (10-0-1) from Jan. 21, 1999-March 4, 2000. St. Louiss kicked off a three-game trip on Tuesday night with a season-high sixth straight victory, besting the Edmonton Oilers 5-2.dddddddddddd The Blues scored three times in the second period, with David Backes power-play goal in the frame the difference. Chris Stewart, Maxim Lapierre, Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund also scored for the Blues, while Brian Elliott needed to make only 16 saves to win his seventh straight decision. "They played us pretty hard for the first half of the game before we got a power-play goal that allowed us to lock down the hatches after that," said Backes of his 17th tally of the season that came with 9:04 to play in the second period. Tuesdays win marked the quickest the Blues have ever reached the 30-win plateau in franchise history as they did so in their 42nd game of 2013-14. They will next try to win seven straight for the first time since Oct. 22-Nov. 7, 2010. A win would also move St. Louis into a tie with the idle Chicago Blackhawks atop the Central Division. The Blues, though, could be without forward T.J. Oshie after he had to be helped off the ice late in Tuesdays win following a knee-on-knee hit with the Oilers Taylor Hall. Oshie, who has 29 assists and 37 points in 42 games this season, is day-to-day. St. Louis will close out its road trip in Vancouver tomorrow night and Elliott is expected to start that contest. That means that Jaroslav Halak will make his first start tonight since allowing three goals on 13 shots through just 20 minutes of action on Dec. 28 versus Chicago. Halak, who also has recently been battling illness, is 3-5-1 with a 2.66 goals against average in nine career starts versus the Flames. He faced them recently on Dec. 23 in Calgary, making 26 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss. The Blues have still won six of their last nine versus the Flames, but have lost five of its past seven in Calgary. ' ' '
