If Las Vegas is to support an NHL franchise, it wont be on the backs on tourists - according to potential owner Bill Foley, who plans to bring the city its first major sports franchise. I dont want to see everyone in the stands with a Canucks jersey on, Foley said in an interview with ESPNs Scott Burnside on Thursday. Im not trying to promote the Red Wings. Foley, a former mortgage financier, added that an NHL franchise would receive help from the citys extensive number of tourists but the goal will be to attract locals to the arena. We know that were going to get great casino support, Foley told Burnside. But I want the guy that lives in Henderson (located just outside of Las Vegas), I want him to be there. The future of a potential franchise will receive a major test in the coming months with a season ticket-drive led by Foley and a possible blessing from the NHL. Foley has a two-part plan for drumming up interest from locals. The first is contacting citizens and businesses to express their formal interest in a professional hockey team and then asking those who expressed interest for a form of financial commitment to season tickets. Foley will meet with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly next week to discuss and finalize plans for his ticket drive. The league endorsed a trial drive earlier this week at its annual December meetings. Foley and the Maloof family have been working on plans for a Las Vegas-based franchise over the past 15 months. He notes that though progress has been made, he and his partners have to provide proof the city could support a franchise. Weve made good progress, but the reality is that Las Vegas is an unproven market, Foley told ESPN. Foley, at the very least, has the support of The Great One. Hes a wonderful man, Wayne Gretzky told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. He would be a great owner if he gets a team. He loves hockey and he loves sports. He would be unreal. It would be good for hockey if he gets the team. He loves the game. Foley is nearing a lease agreement with the builders of the currently in construction $350 million venue being built by MGM Resorts International and AEG. The arena is set to hold a capacity of 20,000, though the official seating chart is yet to be completed. .75 million contract for the 2014 season and avoided arbitration. The team announced the agreement on Tuesday. . The right-hander said he threw about 30 pitches in a routine bullpen session Sunday at Yankee Stadium, his final hurdle before starting Tuesday night at Tampa Bay. http://www.airjordannz.com/. Grimes signed a $32 million, four-year contract to remain with Miami. The deal, which includes $16 million guaranteed, rewards Grimes for his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury that forced him to miss almost all of the 2012 season. . Adding playoff teams. Monitoring instant replay from league headquarters. Possibly creating a set of guidelines to prevent locker-room bullying. . Jim Leyland, in his eighth playoffs, has never had a starting rotation he trusts as much as the grouping of Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister. The Dallas Cowboys are releasing Kyle Orton after their backup quarterback missed all the off-season workouts amid reports he was considering retirement. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Cowboys were cutting ties with Orton slightly more than a week before the start of training camp. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the decision. The 31-year-old Orton started the finale last year after Tony Romo injured his back a week earlier. The Cowboys lost to Philadelphia, their third straight season-ending defeat against an NFC East rival with a playoff berth on the line. The new backup is likely to be Brandon Weeden, Clevelands first-round draft pick in 2012. The Cowboys signed Weeden in March, and he worked with the first team during the off-season while Romo continued his recovery from back surgery. Orton was fined about $70,000 for failing to report during the off-season and missing the mandatory minicamp in June. The move saves DDallas about $3.dddddddddddd25 million this season, but will cost the team about that amount on the salary cap over the next two seasons. After getting into just one game in his first season with the Cowboys in 2012, Orton played briefly in two games last year before starting against the Eagles. He was 30 of 46 for 358 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions against Philadelphia, including one late that clinched the Eagles 24-22 win. Orton has started 70 of 75 games in a nine-year career. He spent his first three seasons in Chicago before going to Denver, where he lost the starting job to Tim Tebow and signed with Kansas City after the Broncos cut him during the season. Weeden started right away after the Browns took him with the 22nd pick, but was benched for good late in his second season with a career record of 5-15, including losses in all five starts in 2013. Weeden turns 31 in October but is going into just his third season because he spent five years playing professional baseball out of high school. ' ' '
