Europe needed to overturn a three-point deficit in Sundays 12 singles matches to claim an unprecedented fourth straight win in the biennial contest, but USA proved too powerful on the final day. Although Darren Clarkes side won three of the first five matches convincingly, wins for Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Ryan Moore took the home side over the winning line. They halved the next two holes with birdies, and after McIlroy holed a 60-foot birdie putt on the 8th Reed answered with a 35-foot birdie putt to halve. Reed held his nerve on the final green to beat McIlroy by one point The blistering action started to take its toll on McIlroy, whos putter cooled, starting with a 5-foot par putt on the 9th that would have won the hole. Reed went ahead with a 6-foot par on 12, McIlroy missed a 5-foot par that would have won the 13th, and Reed pulled 2 up with a birdie from the bunker on the 16th. Koepka tried to reach the par 4 fifth hole in one but ended up driving his ball into a spectators rucksack during play on Saturday Masters champion Willett had a forgettable Ryder Cup debut although he struck first with a birdie on the second and still lead until Koepka holed out for eagle on 7 for a 1-up lead. Willett tweeted to say the behaviour of some home fans at the Ryder Cup proves his brother Petes controversial magazine article was right Koepka won three straight holes with a Willett bogey and two straight birdies, and he closed out the match by holing a 6-foot par to halve the 14th hole.
