XRAY - Model racing cars

I see a lot of setups with shims, top and bottom of shocks. What does it do and why?

Since joining Xray I have always used this, but recently we have tested it. You seem to get a little more roll/grip with less shims so its simply going to be a try it and see. I dont think it transforms car but does make a difference.

The main ones I play with are the ones at the top of the front shocks. Adding shims (up to 4mm max) makes the car more stable, reducing mid-exit steering. Removing them (down to 2mm minimum) adds mid-exit steering.

Still need to test the rear shimming to understand it more.

Definitely agree that adding shims behind the top of the front shock will make the car smoother in big/sweeping corners. This has always worked this way at my home track on the old CRC carpet and it is one of the changes I recently tried at Snowbirds on the new CRC carpet with the same effect. This was a small change I made at Snowbirds to make the car a little easier to drive and more consistent.

For rear shimming, I have always felt that more shims under the bottom of the rear shock increases rotation. Though I pretty much always run the kit setting of 2mm behind the bottom but remove the shims from behind the top of the rear shock to achieve the same feeling. I did not get to test this on the new CRC carpet.

Thanks for all the great replies. It's all good stuff. I generally try to run a very neutral setup, as it makes it easier to drive. At 65 I need easy...lol. But, I'm struggling to understand how the shock angle, in respect to shimming, has so much affect on how the car handles.
