I can fit a 5-8mm thick foam piece between the bumper and body (for Protoform shells - Speed 6, LTC-R and GX) it all depends on how you want to mount the shell. We experiment at lot with the positioning of the body as a body mounted more towards the front will have significantly more steering and reaction especially in high speed, however, at the expense of some stability. There should be no "play" at the front so you should fill up the empty space with foam pieces.
Depending on the mounting position, wheel wells tend to be a bit in front of the front wheels - that's how we like to run it for a more aggressive feel. You should cut out the wheel wells so that there is plenty of room for the body to "flex" inwards without the body getting tucked into the wheels.
