I noticed in the latest Euro Touring Series pictures that Hagberg (and others) trim the front and rear drive shaft axles, so that they don't extend beyond the axle nut holding the spec tires. Is this recommended?

if you hit the boards /track markings they can dig in and cause more damage, grinding off the excess prevents it from digging in

Highly recommended as it prevents the axles from ripping through track markings/boards and thus damaging the car's suspension, and also to minmize damage to the carpet, when the car lands on its side in a crash.
