Post subject:  Roll center too high?

Hi,

I’ve been working on my setup for the national championship this weekend and I have a question.

I am using the recommended carpet/rubber setup from Martin as my starting point and I haven’t changed much.
The track is a small tight track with high grip and I’ll probably be using Sorex 32 and JB blue medium profile inserts on JB/Orion Hard dish rims.
The track has a couple of bumps but I would generally call it relatively flat.

There are a couple of turns that are very easy to “overshoot” making the car spin out our go very wide. I tried to experiment with the downstops to prevent the car from spinning out but the car was not good to drive on the other parts of the track when I got rid of the spinning out:

Anyway, I ended up with a setup similar to the recommended starting setup except from raising the roll center front and rear so much that I suspect something else is wrong…

I ended up with 2mm shims under the front camber link and 3mm under the rear camber link.
Downstop is about 2mm over ride height in front and 3-4mm over ride height in the rear.

Should I remove the shims and go for anti-roll bars instead?

What can I expect will happen?

I have very limited time to test before the race (if any) so I would like hear the evaluation of you experienced racers before I decide to try it.

Regards

Ole, with those latest changes and the high roll center front and rear is the car working now?

If not, what roll center position are you using for the lower arms? What type of corners are you having problems with and is the problem on corner entry (off power), midway or corner exit (on power)?

I’m sorry for not explaining good enough, I’ll try to do a better job this time

I’ve attached the setup I ended up with to get the car to work properly.
-EDIT:Okay, so theres no attach function on this forum? I've tried with Yahoo photoshare but it shrinks the picture so it's not good to read. Now how do I show you my setup?

With the same setup but without the raised roll center the car felt much more unstable and I had problems with the rear spinning out in tight corners off power (I tend to drive relatively aggressive).
With the raised roll center the car “grips” the corners much better. It doesn’t roll freely through the corners but slows down much faster (scrubs of more speed) but still feels stable (hard to explain this…). This is maybe not the best way to go for low lap times but it makes it much easier to drive a tight line around the track.

I’m just wondering if I should remove the shims from the camber links and try anti-roll bars instead. It seems to me like this high roll center is not “right”, if you know what I mean…

It's worth a try. However I tended to run high roll center on the FK04 in most events. In fact I had the rear arms in the uppermost position at least 60% of the time with the front arms in the middle or upper position.
