They are awesome but not something you should get if you don't have a few grand to shell out for maintenance when shit goes wrong. There's a new members section on rx8club.com that gives you an in depth list of things to replace and specific points in the cars lifetime. Back when the 8y/100k warranty was valid on most of them, you wouldn't have to worry too much about replacing the motor yourself. Since that's only avail for some 2009+ cars now you are probably looking into having to do it yourself. These are amazing cars and while they aren't fast in a straight line they will make most cars look stupid on the track. The average lifetime of a motor all depends on how well you maintain the car, they aren't the ticking timebombs people make them out to be if you know how to take care of them.
