Post subject: | Think my clutch spring is too tight |
Hi guys to took my clutch bell of to check my clutch, the spring preload seems to be a bit too much, its 2.5mm from the end of the spring collar to the end of the threads, I thought this distance was supposed to be about 1.6mm, however this said, my clutch seems to engage earlier than some of the other cars, which is the opposite to what i was expecting. It had a new clutch shoe and weights recently, the shoe is the yellow harder shoe which seems slightly thicker than the standard one could this maybe be the problem? |

Be sure to set the gap right, with a to small gap indeed you do need to tighten up the preload |

There is a saying "You learn something every day". Well I've learnt something today and that is I didn't think it was possible to run a clutch set at 2.5 mm spring loading. To suggest it is engaging more quickly than some of the other competitors is truely amazing. We normally run 1.2mm to 1.3mm with a 1.9mm spring and yellow shoe. If we tighten it a mm or so more it will slip. Whilst we are on clutches. Most people tell me that if you want a clutch with good punch then the yellow shoe (harder than white) is better. Is it not the case that when a soft shoe engages with the bell the clutch will be more instant and give more punch. It seems logical that a softer shoe will slip less than a hard shoe but will wear more quickly. What do the experienced guys think? |
