Post subject:  Servos for the NT1

I'm almost finished building my car and I haven't bought the servos yet. I'm thinking of the JR Z8800S Digital Hi-Speed Surface Servo for throttle and Steering but I'm curious to know what everyone else has. This one has 105oz torque in .08 sec, digital, and metal gears. Anything else out there better?

That servo in the review is nice but is listed a little slower than the JR servo I found. I still think i may go with it because the torque comparison is almost 40% more. Two of these for steering and throttle seems like a very good combo.

If you take a look on the list of the servos used by the top on road drivers, you can only read KO and Sanwa. This is why I choose KO (even if I have Fubaba 3PK), and why I'll suggest you this two brands.
I think a good servo for the steering have to be fast and strong.
8Kg and 0.10 sec/60° is the minimum.
You can find a lot of good servos with this values like Sanwa VRX or KO PS2173 (if you want analog servos) and Sanwa WZ or KO PDS 2367 (if you need digital ones). A good choice may be also KO PDS2413 for its very very low profile and weight.
At the same time I think the servo for throttle/brake has to be not so fast for two reasons
- Too much response to the throttle may have a bad response from the engine.
- Too much speed may cause oversteering exiting corner.
and also a mighty one is needed for the brake.
So better stronger and less fast.
As KO PS2174 or Sanwa VZ (analog) and KO PDS2368 or Sanwa WX(digital).
Why I prefer KOs ? Here in Italy I can find the case and gears to replace if they broke !

How fast a servo must be is a long discussion on its own.

For a long time I did not invest a lot into servo's and was always using a standard Futaba 3001 on the throttle and a Futaba 9001 on the steer and I thought that was enough
Due end of life I decided to get faster servo's. For a national on a smal track and a lot of tricky corners I was training with the old servo's and the next day with a set of new KO servo's, a 2173 and a 2363 (alsmost same specs) and it was easyer to drive with. The car was more direct with steering and I could make an emergency brake without a crash.

Yes, I learned that a fast servo is very wishfull for a better control.
Oversteer is something you can screw out the car without loosing a fast steering

Setting up an 2nd car I needed a new pair of servo's, the ACE DS1013 (now DS1015) was the best choice and for 3 years I am still driving them. The new ACE DS0606 is the one I like to have next on my throttle, with fast brake/throttle combinations I noticed there is a slight delay which costs me tenths of a secconds on a laptime......

My opinion: faster is better

When choosing a servo on speed and torque be sure to compare the numbers in equal situation like 4.8v or 6v and the time in an angle of 45 or 60 degrees. Some servo's are maybe lower in specs when choosing a settime over 60 degrees while others seems faster but given over 45 degrees.

The speedest servo is nothing if you don't have the fastest transmitting system as the Spektrum is (or 2.4 Ghz similar).
