For some odd reason they were disabled but avatars were enabled.

i moderate on 2 UK based forums & can fully understand the reasons behind this. Avatars are usually small & don't take long to load but with signatures people just keep putting more & more information in there or bigger & bigger pictures & for somebody with a slow connection each page can take ages to load 
i'm sure we'd all rather see the bandwidth used for information
