FINAL: Chiefs 26 , Cardinals 14Fourth quarterThe Cardinals end their final drive — and the last drive of the game —on. He runs it to the Arizona 30 for 35 yards. Another touchdown would’ve covered the spread (17 pts.), but that’s game! Chiefs win. Chiefs end their next drive on another punt — Dustin Colquitt’s sixth today. 2 minutes remain. The Chiefs end their next drive on a punt, but as the Cardinals offense takes the field, Kansas City’s defense remains solid to try and close the game out. An 11 play drive by the Cardinals, which lasts three and a half minutes only sees 26 yards. Rosen gets sacked THREE times. First by Chris Jones, then by Allen Bailey and the third time by Dee Ford — forcing a Turnover On Downs. David Johnson opens the drive with 12 combined rushing yards. On the next play, Dee Ford comes up big for the Chiefs. He reads the Cardinals attempt at a reverse with JJ Nelson perfectly for a loss of 10 for the visitors. Rosen throws two incomplete passes following the play and Arizona ends on a punt, which is returned by Hill for an 82-yard touchdown that’s nullified.Mahomes combines with Hunt and Kelce for 28 yards to put the Chiefs within striking distance and it’s Spencer Ware who takes it home for 3 yards. The Chiefs go for the Two-point conversion, but it’s no good. Chiefs lead 26-14. After the Cardinals open the next drive strong with a 23-yard-pass from Rosen to David Johnson, Justin Houston decides enough is enough and intercepts Rosen’s next throw, intended for Johnson, to send the ball back to the Chiefs offense. Leading only by 7, the Chiefs end the drive with a punt after Mahomes was sacked for the fifth time today after Andrew Wylie misses Josh Bynes coming inside. Things aren’t looking good for the Chiefs on their next play. Mahomes throws an incomplete short right, while Eric Fischer picks up a 10-yard Offensive Holding penalty. Next play, Hunt rushes up the middle for 6 yards — attempts his signature hurdle to go further — but is denied by the Arizona defense. On the first play of the fourth, Mahomes finds Tyreek Hill for 4 yards. He runs outside back at the KC 44 and proceeds to limp off of the field following the play. Chiefs offense starts the fourth with the ball. Third quarterArizona offense is up next and the Chiefs defense forces a crucial three-and-out to end the third quarterAfter gaining 41 yards over 5 plays, the Chiefs don’t have the same luck — ending in a punt with Cardinals only trailing by a touchdown.Arizona scores a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half. Rosen’s pass game and Johnson’s rush game were strong in getting Arizona within striking distance. David Johnson ran it home for a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Extra point is good. Chiefs lead 20-14. Halftime: Chiefs 20, Cardinals 7Second quarterMahomes combines with Hill and Robinson for a combined 17 yards over 3 plays. Chiefs then take their first timeout and on the second play, Mahomes is sacked by Benson Mayowa for a loss of 8 yards. Mahomes throws an incomplete intended for Robinson and the Chiefs end the drive — and the half — with a punt. After getting into KC territory on their next drive, following a 24-yard pass from Rosen to David Johnson, Rosen is sacked by Ron Parker for a 6-yard loss and then again by Chris Jones — who comes up big with a strip sack on the next play for a loss of 14-yards. Jones fumbles and it’s recovered by Arizona. Mahomes finds Hunt on back-to-back throws for a combined 30-yards. Then 1st & Goal, Mahomes gets sacked again , but recovers soon — throwing a 14-yard TD pass to Tyreek Hill. Hill gets behind the camera when he was celebrating and is called for Unsportsmanlike Conduct for 15 yards enforced between downs. Anywho, extra point is good and Chiefs lead 20-7Cardinals get to their own 30 before a penalty sets them back 10-yards after DT Andre Smith is called for Offensive Holding. They end the drive with a punt and Chiefs offense takes the field. Mahomes finds Kareem Hunt at the Arizona 27 for 18 yards then again on the next play at the Arizona 18 for 9 yards. However, Mahomes gets sacked for the third time today and the Chiefs go for the FG. Harrison Butker sends it home for 46-yards to extend the Chiefs advantage. Chiefs lead 13-7. First quarterTyreek Hill is on today. 1st & 10 at the KC 18, Tyreek takes it up the right hand side for 20 yards. Chiefs get into Arizona territory soon after on the fourth play when Mahomes finds Demarcus Robinson deep middle for 17 yards at the Arizona 45 to end the first quarter. Dee Ford and Justin Houston combine on the Cardinals next drive and force them to end in a punt. Chiefs offense takes the field. Despite starting the drive with an advantage and some strong moments from Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs can’t find the end zone and are hurt by a False Start penalty called on Travis Kelce at the Arizona 14. On the next play, Mahomes gets sacked by Chandler Jones and the Chiefs go for a field goal — it’s good. Chiefs lead 10-7. The next drive for Kansas City opens with an onside kick by the Cardinals, which goes out of bounds and puts Mahomes and the Chiefs at the Cardinals 38 to start. The Cardinals find the light at the end of their 6 minute long drive when Josh Rosen finds David Johnson for a 9-yard touchdown. The extra point is good from Phil Dawson and it’s all tied up. Chiefs 7, Cardinals 7.As Chiefs defense takes the field, they see Justin Houston for the first time since Jacksonville and Ben Niemann gets the first start of his career. Daniel Sorenson also takes the field for third down — his first time back since being out with injury.Chiefs get off to a start almost as fast as Tyreek Hill. On the first play of the game, Tyreek Hill turns on cheetah mode to get into open space and Mahomes finds him for a 40-yard pass. Moments later, on the third play, it’s Hill again. Mahomes finds him for a 37-yard TD, which he runs in with ease. Chiefs lead 7-0 early over the Cardinals. The Chiefs lose their first coin toss of the season after nine straight wins. Arizona defers and Kansas City starts on offense. WarmupsSalute to ServiceInactivesPregameThe Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) host the Arizona Cardinals (2-6) Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. But by holding Derek Carr and the rest of the Oakland offense in check, it gave the Chiefs some positive momentum heading into the playoffs, not to mention proof that some subtle tweaks to their personnel packages had paid dividends.“We just have to keep it rolling,” said linebacker Justin Houston, the defense’s longtime emotional leader. “It’s a great time for us to play like this. We were firing on all cylinders from the front to the back end (against Oakland), and now we just have to build off it.”That’s because Andrew Luck and the rest of the Indianapolis Colts, who come to Kansas City for the divisional round Saturday, represent a massive upgrade in competition.Luck threw the second-most touchdown passes in the NFL this season, behind the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, and played behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Indy offense isn’t a one-trick pony, either. The Colts dominated the Texans on the ground in a 21-7 win in the wild-card round as Marlon Mack piled up 148 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Colts have roared into the postseason with seven wins in eight games.“Andrew’s going to get you every once in a while,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “and you’ve got to make sure you get him more than he gets you, but he’s got a lot of good players around him. That offensive line, people can argue with you that it’s the best in the National Football League. You look at the receivers, they’ve got good receivers, they’ve got good tight ends, you go all the way around.“You’ve got to bring your best. That’s what the playoffs are all about,” Reid added. “This is the best in the National Football League , which is the best in the world, and you have an opportunity to do that. That’s an exciting thing, but you better bring your best every play.”The question for the Chiefs is simple, though: Is their best good enough?Indianapolis was fifth in scoring while the Chiefs were 24th in scoring defense. They were last in the league in rush defensive efficiency, average yards after contact and first-down percentage, and they were second-to-last in yards-per-carry allowed despite many teams trying to play catch-up.As bad as those numbers were, though, the Chiefs were actually respectable against the pass. And they were downright dominant when it came to pressuring the quarterback, generating sacks on 7.4 percent of pass plays — better even than Khalil Mack and the Bears — and pressure on 31.1 percent of them. That sets the stage for an intriguing matchup between the Indy offensive line, which has allowed no more than one sack in a game since Week 4, and the Chiefs’ dominant pass rush.“The goal and strategy remains the same,” Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni said. “Run the football and set up other things by running it, and then be successful in situational football.”The Chiefs made some key personnel changes late in the season, effectively benching veteran safety Ron Parker and cornerback Orlando Scandrick. Daniel Sorensen, Charvarius Ward and Jordan Lucas have been playing more, and their results against woebegone Oakland were encouraging. The Chiefs also could get safety Eric Berry back after he missed Week 17 with a recurrence of his heel injury. Berry played only two games this season, but he changed the entire dynamic of the Kansas City defense for the snaps he was on the field.“We’ve just got to lock in,” Chiefs cornerback Kendall Fuller said. “For us, we’re inside this building. That’s the only thing we’re focusing on. I’m not a big social media guy. We just come together week-in and week-out, to win on Saturday. We just keep it in-house and focus on each other.”NOTES: Berry and WR Sammy Watkins (foot) participated in the portion of practice open to the media Tuesday. DT Derrick Nnaddi (concussion) also said that he’d been cleared to rejoin practice. … OLB Dorian O’Daniel did not practice because of a calf and ankle injury.100<button class="view-gallery">View Gallery</button> Gallery:View from the sidelines: NFL cheerleaders 2018Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports | Raj Mehta
