You could slightly sand the composite axle just a tad to get it to go on easier. As xraywakkaman mentions add some lubricant to the axle to get it to go on easier.

I used the supplied tool to help get it partially on initially, and slowly screwed the rim on to get it to go the rest of the way.

I've had the turnbuckle thing happen to my a couple of times. You don't actually have to take the whole thing apart to snap it back in place. Actually, I just snapped it place both times it happened. Give it a try next time..
